If we are to believe parallels established between artifacts, architecture and funerary rituals fom the Balkans, Greece, Turkey and the Levant during Neolithic times, the change of range of artifacts and stylistic repertories seems to take place at the same time with the geographical movement of people or cultures. Nevertheless, only stylistic aspects of each production have up till now been considered to give information, but reveal very few similarities. Techniques have rarely been studied in this perspective.

The Crimean Palaeolithic

Two Eemian and four post-Eemian Middle Palaeolithic (MP) industrial traditions are recognised in the Crimea, namely : Late Acheulean, Eastern Taubachian, then Eastern Micoquian (Ak-Kaian), two kinds of para-Micoquian or Micoquian-related Charentoid industries (Kiik-Kobian and Staroselian), and Typical Mousterian (Kabazian). The Crimean MP undoubtedly belongs to the sphere of ideas and logic of development of the European Palaeolithic. However it survived until comparatively late (ca. 30 kyr BP) which adds originality to the process of the local MP / UP transition.

Middle Paleolithic hafted stone tools from Starosele, Western Crimea

Microscopic use-wear and complementary residue examination of chipped stone tools document a hafting technology of wood handles or detachable foreshafts in excess of 40,000 years old. Microwear used to identify the hafted portion of these tools is based upon experimental and archaeological analogs-most notably of North American Paleoindian Folsom and experimental replicate projectile points. Haft residues include plant cells and starch grains. The former appears to be the actual handle or foreshaft material ; the latter the remains of a mastic used to glue tools to a handle or foreshaft.

The Okiizini cave, situated on the foothills of the Taurus Mountain in the South-West of Turkey, has yielded several occupation layers dating from 6.500 to 17.800 B.C. Two main groups can be identified. The one situated in the inferior layers belongs to the backed bladelets and the shouldered pieces tradition. These populations hunted mainly goats. The upper entity starts around 14.000 B.C. Parallel to the development of geometric microliths, appears a bone industry as well as the first artistic, symbolic representation. As far as hunting is concerned, there is a large diversification. It is no longer limited to the plains, but it extends to the forests. The top of the sequence indicates contact with Neolithic man.

The burials in Öküzini Cave (SW Anatolia)

The burials in Öküzini Cave yield important information concerning the burial practices of either the Late Neolithic or Early Chalcolithic periods. The age determination is indicated by a few pottery fragments. Radiocarbon dates of the burials themselves are as yet unavailable. No other graveyards have been discovered in any of the numerous Mount Katran caves. In addition, Neolithic and/or Chalcolithic open-air sites, such as small mounds, have not been located in the Antalya Travertine Plain. These burials are therefore the first evidence for ceremonial activities of people of either Late Neolithic or Chalcolithic age. The presence of such archaeological remains poses important questions concerning cultural connections between the Travertine Plain of Antalya, Mount Katran’s caves and the Central Anatolian Plateau.

The distribution of bifaces in Anatolia

There are two aims of this paper. First, we will concentrate on the distribution of bifaces which have been found in Anatolia until present. The second aim, in the sense of the distribution of bifaces, is to attempt to describe the situation of Anatolia in the world. Recently, there is a new hypothesis that the tradition of biface-making migrated from Africa to the Near East (Levant), and to southeast Anatolia, then toward Europe by crossing the Caucasus mountains and from the north of the Black Sea Region. This hypothesis depends on the finding of bifaces which are rare or unknown west of Anatolia, Greece and the Balkans. We believe that the geographic position of Anatolia will make this hypothesis much clearer, because Anatolia has always had a crucial position between Eurasia and Africa.

Évolution de l’environnement dans la plaine de Konya (Turquie) pendant l’Holocène = Environmental changes in Anatolia during Holocene : examples from the Konya Plain, Inner Anatolia

Located in the endoreic and semi-arid plateaus of inner Anatolia, the Konya Plain corresponds to a Glacial lake (21-17,000 years BP) where lakes and marshes reappeared partly and temporarily during the Holocene. In five sub-basins of the plain, several sequences studied in open sections and in the upper part of a core allow us to propose a chronological scheme and to evidence environmental variations during the Holocene. The characterization of past environments is based on sedimentological analyses on lacustrine, marshy, soil and aeolian deposit successions. The chronological frame is based on a series of 14C dates. Interpretation of results shows increasing dryness from the beginning of the Younger Dryas (ca. 11,000 14C conv. years BP), followed by, after ca. 8,000 years BP, alternances of “humid” and “dry” periods. After the mid-Holocene drought which is marked by the construction and mobilization of sand dunes, the causes of environmental changes observed are difficult to assess : either they are linked to negative or positive impacts of human acivities on the availability of the water resources or on the stability of soils, or they represent decreasing or increasing variations in rainfall amounts. However, some recent Holocene environmental changes seem to record some recent climatic changes, such as a more humid period at the beginning of the 6th millennium BP, followed by a severe drought which has been evidenced in other regions of the Near East.

This paper is about preliminary paleontological and archeozoological results obtained in two Syrian sites dating from the Middle Paleolithic : Umm El Tlel and Dederiyeh cave. The faunal associations are dominated by dromedary in Umm El Tlel and by ovicaprids in Dederiyeh Cave. Both bone accumulations, for the most part, are the result at human activities. They suggest elaborate social organization : hunting practices and differential treatment of carcasses.

At Umm El Tlel, pollen analyses have revealed rapid variations in climate during the Middle Paleolithic, within a wider, moderate glacial period. The same analyses have also established the existence of a cold and humid stage, contemporaneous with the Aurignacian and dated to 32 000 +- 580 yr B.P.
