The latter having been demolished in 1521, the construction of a new fortified house – destined not to sustain major sieges but rather to serve as a refuge – was started in 1525. Already by the late 16th c., however, it was no longer continuously in use and it depreciated prematurely, being converted into a prison in the early 17th c. In the early 18th c., some effort was made to refurbish the building but in 1721, the old residential apartments were demolished and in 1796, the castle was condemned. Being of an irregular pentagonal shape, the castle is a mountain construction and consists of two large courts surrounded by buildings, the entrance way being defended by a large round tower. The author describes the plan and the buildings, using the historical evidence and field observations. He also presents the results of the 1984 excavations, which concerned the entrance defensive system (pavement, porch, casemate, etc.). Le « Vieux-Château » de la principauté de Stavelot (prov. de Liège) fut édifié suite à la politique du prince-abbé Guillaume de Manderscheidt qui visait à récupérer le château de Logne. Ce dernier ayant été démoli en 1521, la construction d'une nouvelle maison-forte destinée non pas à soutenir des sièges importants mais plutôt à servir de refuge, fut entamée en 1525. Toutefois, dès la fin du 16e s., elle n'était plus utilisée couramment et tomba prématurément en vétusté, devenant une prison au début du 17e s. Il y eut un effort de réaménagement au début du 18e s., mais en 1721 les anciens appartements résidentiels furent démolis et, en 1796, le château fut détruit par les révolutionnaires locaux. Le château en forme de pentagone irrégulier est une construction de montagne et comporte deux grandes cours entourées de bâtiments, l'entrée étant défendue par une grosse tour ronde. L'auteur décrit le plan et les bâtiments à partir des sources historiques, iconographiques et des observations de terrain. Il présente également les résultats des fouilles de 1984 qui concernaient le système défensif de l'entrée (pavement, porche, casemate, etc.).
