The vaccine used conlained the attenuated strain SAD Bl9 of rabies virus into baits. These baits were distributed on an area of 2100 km² at a range density of 11 baits per square kilometer. At the end of the last campaign, tetracycline (marker of bait uptake) was found in 65 % of foxes collected in the vaccination area ; 75 % of them presented antirabies neutralizing antibodies. The incidence of rabies decreased drastically in 1987 in the vaccination area as compared to untreated ones. A first limited trial of antirabies vaccination of foxes in the field with a recombinant vaccine-rabies virus was carried out in October 1987 on the military domein of Marche and confirmed the perfect safety of the procedure. Des campagnes de vaccination antirabique du renard par voie orale ont été menées en Belgique en septembre 1986, juin et septembre 1987. Le vaccin utilisé contenait la souche atténuée SAD Bl9 du virus rabique administrée sous forme d'appâts. Les appâts ont été distribués sur une superficie de 2100 km² à une densité moyenne de 11 par km². A l'issue de la dernière campagne, de la tétracycline (marqueur de prise) a été trouvée chez 65 % des renards trouvés dans la zone de vaccination et 75 % d'entre eux possédaient des anticorps neutralisants. L’incidence de la rage a considérablement diminué en 1987 dans la zone vaccinée. Un premier essai limité de vaccination antirabique du renard à l'aide d'un virus recombinant vaccine-rage, pratiqué en octobre 1987 sur le terrain militaire de Marche, a confirmé l’innocuité du procédé.
