A high incidence of broken legs being observed in a fattening unit, the farmer decided to feed the animals with a concentrate containin 2 kg/T of potassium bromide. This compound was supposed to quiet the animals. Broken legs were indeed occuring after mounting activities. Two groups of 7 fattening bulls were observed in adjacent pens in a littered loose house. One group was fed with a control diet and the other with the KBr supplemented diet. Resting and mounting behaviours were recorded, using a video equipment, before (period 1), 4 days (period 2) and 4 months (period 3) after the beginning of the experiment. Observations were performed during 3 days in periods 1 and 2 and during 5 days in period 3. The mean percentage of lying time was 63%. 'The difference between groups was not significant. The mean numbers of standing bouts per 24 h were 18, 20 and 15 during the 3 periods respectively. The difference between periods 2 and 3 was significant but not between the two goups. Peaks of mounting activity were observed during the two feeding periods and one occured during the night. The incidence of mounting behaviour was very different from day to day. Treatment with potassium bromide had no effect on this behaviour. For example, in period 3, mounting occured 13.1 +- 9. 1 and 9.5 +- 11.3 times per animal and per day, respectively with the two groups. No broken leg was observed in the stable during the 4 months from period 1 to period 3.

We wished to control the reproductive capacities of European quail, a migratory bird, during the first six months of its Iife. For natural populations, in Europe, this period usually occurs under decreasing daylength and induces inhibition of sexuality. Five groups of European quails, born in August, were reared under a photoperiod which varied from LD 11.20 / 12.40 to LD 15.20 / 8.40, therefore with the same increase in photoperiod, but with the increase starting at different ages:7, 10, 13, 16 and 24 weeks. Molt, fat deposition, corporal weight and genital development were measured regularly. All the birds showed sexual development whatever their age when daylength was increased. However, the speed of sexual development varied between the different groups of birds. Results can be explained by the temporal coincidence between the experimental photoperiodic lengthening and the different mechanisms which underlie the biological cycle of the species. For example, the fall molt normally occurs when the birds are approximately 12 weeks old. In the two first groups of birds this molt was inhibited by photostimulation and the subsequent reproductive development. On the contrary. it occurred in birds in the third group, so daylength started to increase when birds had started to molt. On the other hand, the endogenous cycle of reproduction may enhance sexual development even under short days and may contribute to the highest state of development in the fifth group.

Coprophagy has been observed in the african giant rat (Cricetomys gambianus). It is a caecotrophic process and it involves the female as well as the male.

Artificial spawning of the nase (Chondroslomas nasus) was undertaken using males and females caught-in a fish pass on the river Meuse (Belgium). Eggs were incubated in an experimental hatchery, producing 33,227 larvae reared in tanks and fed with artificial or natural food. After a 36 days period of rearing, the survival rates ranged from 32.8 to 99.8 %. Fish were 17.9 to 25.0 mm long and weighed 55 to 168 mg.

A large-scale field trial using the recombinant vaccinia-rabies virus started in Belgium in November 1989. Twenty-five thousand similar baits each containing 10 exposant 8 TCb 50 of VVTGgRAB were dropped by helicopters in a 2200 km2 area in south Belgium. This campaign has been repeated in April 1990. After the baiting campaign. both efficacy and innocuity of the method were monitored in the field as well as in laboratory. A fiel control of the bait uptake has shown that 96 % of the baits were either consumed or at least removed by animals after 30 days. After the first vaccination campaign, 23 adult foxes,33 cats,9 dogs, 10 stone martens, 1 badger, 1 wild cat and 24 rodents were collected within the treated area for postmortem examination, rabies diagnosis and tetracycline (biomarker) detection. No pox-like lesion could be detect in any specimen.
