The ultimate goal is to refine the undertstanding of the recruitment process. The sample is part of a local population whose numbers fluctuate between 70 and 80 individuals, a population which had been fastly expanding in the early eighties. The habitat is an old meander of the river Meuse on the Belgian-Dutch border, isolated upstream from the main artificial river-bed but still in communicaton with it downstream; it covers 4.40 Ha ; right and left banks develop respectively 656 and 766 m; they are irregularly fringed with willow and alder shrubs and trees, offering less nesting opportunities than required by postulating pairs in spring. Thus, competition for nest sites and territories is high and late settlers have to wait. until successful birds leavc with their chicks or until unsuccessful pain eventually give up after several nesting attempts. It is so far possible to distinguish three successive waves of breeding cycles : the first wave settlers mate, select nest site and defend a territory from late March; part of the breeding pairs is replaced in June by a second wave; a third one, initiated in late July and in August, might produce young reaching autonomy as late as in October. This general outline allows the expression of individual divenity in aggressivity, diligence, persistence or tactics, which may be important for success or failure. Each breeding wave begins with a phase characterized by repeated copulations, continuing for days or weeks, and which probably ensures maturation and synchronization of pair-members. This phase is shortened for birds of the second and third waves, who are already synchronized before winning a nest site. The quick succession of breeding pairs on the nest and territories is to be taken into account when taking a census of a breeding population or when evaluating breeding success and check recruitment. It is argued that population dynamics study as well as habitat and population management have to gain in a better knowledge of behaviour, through an integrated approach of both the population and the individual and social levels. A psycho-ethological methodology has been applied on the triangle oi interactions : male - female - brood : this approach is characterized by an interrogation on the status of each element of the triad (each ïime it is possible) compared to the others; the answer to these questions should allow to better build up the Umwelt of the studied species. Le comportement d'un couple de Buse variable Buteo buteo a été étudié au moment des éclosions des jeunes : le rythme d'activité à l'aire, la répartition du temps de couvaison mâle-femelle, l'évolution de la durée des principaux comportements à l'aire et les relais de couvaison sont analysés. Une méthodologie de type psycho-éthologique est appliquée au triangle d'interactions : mâle - femelle - couvée : cette approche se caractérise par une interrogation sur le statut de chacun des éléments de la triade (chaque fois qu'il est possible) pour les autres; la réponse aux questions posées devrait permettre de mieux construire 1'Umwelt de l'espèce étudiée. This behaviour is associated with the influence of human activities and with the location of pastures. Des observations diurnes et nocturnes des animaux aux gagnages, sur le plateau des Hautes Fagnes, conduites de l'été 1982 au printemps 1984, ont montré que le cerf rouge utilise ces pâturages surtout la nuit. Such areas however need more attention than others with respect to the otter conservation. The authors have thus attempted to test a quick field-method to give evidence of the presence of surviving animals. They set stone piles at 63 stations scattered on three river systems of Southern Belgium where tracks or signs of otters were recently recorded. In order to give the otters a stimulus to defecate, these stations were provided with foreign spraints and then monitored once a week during 2 months (winter '88-'89 and spring '89). Unfortunately enough, no positive result was obtained in this way. Les auteurs ont expérimenté une méthode rapide de mise en évidence de la présence de la loutre dans les zones où ne subsistent que des effectifs réduits. Leur technique a consisté à placer des stations olfactives en différents points (63) répartis sur trois réseaux hydrographiques du sud de la Belgique où la présence de la loutre avait été récemment notée. Les stations consistaient en amas de pierres sur lesquels était déposée une épreinte de loutre étrangère. Les contrôles, effectués toutes les semaines pendant deux mois au moins, se sont tous révélés négatifs.
