Special attention is given to the recent and serious decrease of the european glass eel stock, a phenomenon also observed in Belgium. Evolutions in the field of eel aquaculture in Europe are outlined, from extensive valliculture to intensive flow through systems and closed recirculation units. A pilot scale recirculation system is described and data on growth and pathology are discussed.
