Generalized Semi-Infinite Optimization and Anticipatory Systems

This article is a small survey and pioneering as a starting point for a longer research project : to utilize generalized semi-infinite optimization for purposes of prediction. Firstly, it reflects tbe analytical and inverse (intrinsic) behaviour of generalized semi-infinite optimization problems P(f,h,g,u,v) and presents interpretations of them from the viewpoint of anticipatory systems. These differentiable problems admit an infinite set Y(x) of inequality constraints y, which depends on the state x. Under suitable assumptions, we present global stability properties of the feasible set and corresponding structural stability properties of the entire optimization problem (Weber, 2002 ; Weber, 2003). The achieved results are a basis of algorithm design. In the course of explanation, the perturbational approach gives rise to reconstructions. By studying three applications of generalized semi-infinite optimization, secondly, we interpret these aspects of inverse problems in the sense of prediction. The three anticipatory systems are : (i) Reverse Chebycchev approximation, where we describe a given system by a neighbouring easier one as long as possible under some error tolerance. We begin by a motivating problem from chemical engineering and turn then to time-dependent systems. (ii) Time-minimal or -maximal optimization problems, where we want to pull or push the time-horizon of some process to present time or into the future. We mention global warming and turn to further kinds of biosystems. (iii) Computational biology, where we are concerned with prediction and stability of DNA microarray gene-expression patterns.

Generalized Formula of Physical Channel Capacities

We consider a process of information transmission in the environment described by the canonical distribution of noise, considered as the transmission channel in the Information Theory. We derive the generalized form of the noisy entropy of this environment. Then, the generalized information capacity formula is derived for the geometric distribution of the output variable under the condition of greater or equal than the minimal value of the mathematical expectation of the input variable. We also state the hypotheses the capacity, when this input parameter is less or equal than that minimal (critical, extreme) value, is just defined by the lower capacity estimation which is the capacity for the limit distribution with this minimal input parameter. This paper generalizes the paper (Hejna & Vajda, 1999) presented on CASYS'98.

Selection of Embedding Dimension and Delay Time in Phase Space Reconstruction

Embedding techniques provide a powerful advance in the development of experiment chaos. However there seems no universal method to find the best set of parameters to use. In this paper, we analyze the drawback of an algorithm of automatic embedding dimension and time delay presented in Reference[1](Massayuki Otani and Antonia Jones, Oct. 2000), and propose a new approach for computing the embedding dimension and delay time based on the multiple autocorrelation and Γ-test. This approach is provided with a sound theoretic basis, and its computing complexity is relatively lower and not strongly depended on the data length. The experimental results indicate that a near optimum embeddingd imension and delay time can be estimated by using this approach, and the accuracy of invariants in phases space reconstruction is efficiently improved.

Block Entropy analysis of long recorded Electrocardiograms as a good way for discrimination between Normal subjects and Coronary patients

Heart Rate Variability timeseries of long recordings of Electrocardiograms are filtered in order to generate a coarse grained linguistic dynamics. Then the Block Entropy analysis is applied in order to analyze the coarse grained statistics. The set of the timeseries is separated in two categories : Normal subjects, and Coronary patients. The entropy analysis provides a quick and efficient tool for discrimination of the timeseries according to these categories. Healthy subjects provided more complex statistics compared to patient ones. In particular the healthy data files provided higher values of block Entropies compared to patient ones. Furthermore all this analysis may provide a useful statistical way to the understanding of the human cardiac system.

Geometrical Invariants Approach to Recognition the Structures in Time Series and Abstract Maps

The problem of recognition of geometrical objects in different types of data and signals is considered. The main tool in the proposed methodology is a new definition of a cluster based on the invariants of some transformations of space. The invariant properties are closely connected to the symmetry groups of objects. As an illustration, the classical symmetries of space such as continuous groups (Lie transformations) are considered. The particular case of spike recognition in neurophysiology is described in details. Preliminary investigations show the high potential power of method. The further prospects of the proposed method are discussed including the problem of perception and models of mentality.

Growth in Economic Systems with Delay

We consider the role of the time delay parameter in basic models of economic growth. We study the Solow model with a time lag. We also consider the dynamical optimization in the Solow model. We demonstrate that, both for Solow's model and Cass' model with a delay, there appear cyclic fluctuations whose parameters we have calculated. These fluctuations have a consbant period and appear through the mechanism of the single Hopf bifurcation.

Digital Image Enlargement Based on Kernel Component Estimation

A new approach for enlarging digital images is proposed. In existing approaches, the assumed reducing operators must be suitable ones for the methods, which means that desirable results are not obtained in other situations. Therefore, an enlargement scheme that can appropriately take reducing operators into account is needed. In this paper, we propose a new enlargement method that can be used for any reducing operators based on the framework of image restoration problems and estimation of the component that belongs to the kernel space of the reducing operator by using statistical properties of natural images.

Systemic Approach to Distribution Law Analysing in Problems of Metrological Accuracy Assurance

This article contains an original approach to the maintenance of objects metrological quality on an example of the measurements accuracy maintenance and assurance. The approach throws down a challenge to the usual practice of "classical" distribution laws application, using of which results in a methodical error, that frequently prevents to provide the metrological characteristics required. It is based on the probabilistic estimation of the parameters of random variables measurements with discrete and continuous "nature" providing information on the object under research. Proposed GANCO law generalizes some well-known laws of random variables distribution and uses analytical open models and simulation models which allow an adaptation to various objects with the purpose of the given metrological accuracy maintenance.

There are plenty of virtual enterprises, which use the classical organization design as a fundamental task for their operation. This paper examines how traditional structural design processes are constructed and points out their weaknesses. The indication of the bounds of action within the virtual infrastructures is examined. The details of the struçture of the virtual enterprise are responsibility of the knowledge specialists. The paper describes an environment to design the organizational structure of virtual enterprises as consisting more of knowledge nodes and inter-organizational networks than physical spaces. Systemic methodologies are used to achieve this goal. The methodologies of this analysis concentrate on the human factor that is evolving in those systems. They are valuable tools for understanding and defining the system functions.

Trans, Inter, Mono-disciplinary Approaches Upon the (Computing) Anticipatory Systems

One of the primary social and economic tasks (or … trouble, but mental gift) is to be aware of beforehand. It would mean : care for the future, task concerned with or applying to the future, procedure(s) of prediction / estimation. But, the social and economic tasks are not isolated. There are complex mental concepts related to the becoming of any human being, and to our societal aggregation. It is the entire auticipation by, with, and in us, society, and world - as an anticipatory system. The New Economy, the Information Society, the Knowledge Society are mental constructs as large as to receive an entire meaning. A corresponding string (comprising the relation : mental concept <=> mental constructs) would be : the foresight, prospective task, forecasting - sustained by trans, inter, and mono-disciplinary approaches of the humankind into our reality and virtuality.

Anticipatory Rule Based Socio-Spatial Simulation Systems for Participatory Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of Corporate and Governmental Plans and Policies

Participatory Anticipatory Rule Based Socio-Spatial Simulation Systems (PARBS4) is in this paper presented as an enrerging field for shrdying questions related to the participatory development, implementation, and evaluation of corporate and governmental plans and policies. Fields like anticipatory rule based simulatiorl GIS, policy, international business, and regional economics could support and/or hinder the development of PARBS4. In reviewing those, possibilities for advancement are identified, along with some of the gaps that need to be filled. Specific combinations of such possibilities are proposed, along with the criteria that could be used to evaluate them. At last, ERASE is proposed as an instance of an international interdisciplinary research programme whose pursuit could lead to the development of PARBS4 as a cognate field.

Anticipation in Social Systems : the Incursion and Communication of Meaning

In social systems, meaning can be communicated in addition to underlying processes of the information exchange. Meaning processing incurs on information processing with hindsight, while information processing recursively follows the time axis. The sole assumption of social relatedness as a variable among goups of agents provides sufficient basis for deriving the logistic map as a first-order approximation of the social system. The anticipatory formulation of this equation can be derived for both anticipation in the interaction term and in the aggregation among subgroups. Using this formula in a cellular automaton, an observer is generated as a reflection of the system under observation. The social system of interactions among observations can improve on the representations entertained by each of the observing systems.

Anticipatory Agents, Scenarios Approach in Decision-Making and some Quantum -Mechanical Analogies

New applications of proposed multi-agent's models of neuronet type with intellectual agents for economics and social problems are described. Some unexpected analogies with some topics from quantum physics are proposed. The selection procedures in proposed models remembers the measurement process of quantum state. Also the analogies with concept from quantum mechanics - namely with many - world interpretation of quantum mechanics is discussed. In such interpretation at each moment of time the system with observer is exposed to branching. We may suppose that such analogies aren't accidental. Another important property of proposed models consists in analogies to the description of quantum process on microlevel to the so-called causal nets in quantum gravity. Multivaluedness of solutions in our models allows connecting of its properties to the gauge theory.

The real business environment phenomena study starts from the undifferentiated real economic relations, its manifesting forms, as well as from the observers and benchmarks used in recording evolution of phenomena. Before assuming any intervention against energy/information available from a certain context, at a certain moment, one obseryer should understand both the core information and related context/moment of the record. Above all, this is a matter of coherence, compatibility and concomitance to the concerned all around reality. Any abatement from established contract jeopardizes the image of both provider and client organizations. On a certain mark of organization's image it is possible to count the attraction grade assigned to an interested organization to cooperate in ajoint venture. Each organization should build a database comprising marks from all related business partners reactions', on either direct or indirect relations. The continuous cybernetic organization's image improvement must be represented as an act operator based on reverberation phenomena of direct and indirect actions.

Formalised Synthetic Modelling of Subject-Object Relations

The linguistic subject-object relation is the most crucial key in undentanding the function of nature because it is intricately related to the human intellect and it is always used in modelling even though we might not be conscious of this role. Hence, this paper presents a novel approach to some very popular fundamental elementary scientific models in the context of the subject-object relation. The advantage of this approach is illustated by a novel interpretation of selected perplexing scientific issues such as the equivalence of mass and energy, the uncertainty principle and the dual aspect of matter. In addition, a crucial application to social sciences is demonstrated through our description of a democratic process based on the real "essence" of democracy rather than that which is focused on the way of its realisation.

Detection of various failure causes in complex mechanical systems by the use of Artificial Neural Networks

The paper presents a methodology based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to perform on-line a diagnosis of the health state of a machinery. The procedure at issue permits to detect the presence of backlash and to determine possible structural failures inside a mechanical system. Backlash and damages are important causes of vibrations in machines, therefore vibrations monitoring gives indirect information on these parasite effects. An ANN is used to classify the system behaviour among a predefined number of classes, receiving as input vibrational signals (simulated or measured). An application is discussed for devices purposely built for indexing motion, where compliance plays an important rôle, affecting the dynamic behavior of the whole machine. An analysis of parameters sensibility for the proposed procedure on simulated cases highlighted the best values and choices for these parameters. Tests of the procedure on experimental data collected on actual devices match closely the good results achieved with simulations.

Design of a Robust Globally Stabilizing PD-Process Control System

We discuss the global asymptotic stabilization of a continuous stirred chemical tank reactor, using linear time invariant PD-control with full state feedback. The control input is the feed temperature or the cooling temperature. The emphasis is placed on the robustness of the design, i.e. the controller globally stabilizes the system's set point without requiring the exact knowledge of the process parameters. The control parameters are tuned by means of a classical root locus analysis of the linearized closed loop dynamics and by simulations of the closed loop transients and phase portraits. The stabilization technique relies on the direct method of Liapunov.

Anticipatory Matching Method for Query-Based Head Gesture Identification

This paper presents a matching method for head gesture identification in a query-based interface. Head gesture identification has been achieved by various methods ; DP matching ; hidden Markov model, and so on. The aims of these conventional methods are dealing with general gestures at arbitrary moment. On the contrary, in our purpose, the timing of a gesture or what gesture will be made are predictable to some extent. The main purpose of this research is to realize an interface under variety of conditions, in flexible situations every time, and everywhere, for example, during walking around. In our system, there are two levels of anticipation features. The one is modifying the reference patterns according to the context of the query and cognitive difficulty of the question before making query. And the other is incursive refinement of reference patterns during matching process with allowance of future revision.

The Minimum Classification Error (MCE) / Generalized Probabilistic Descent (GPD) learning proposed by Katagiri and Juang in 1992 has attracted a great deal of attention for its high recognition performance and wide range of applications including the case where the length of feature vectors is variable like speech recognition. In this report, we propose a new method to improve the generalization performance of the MCE learning by employing an regularization technique which is widely used to solve ill-posed problems. Feed-forward neural networks are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

Prediction and Categorical Control in Regression

A primary application of regression analysis is prediction. In this paper, we consider the definition of the domain of the model in which prediction is valid. This is important because prediction made outside the domain may be unacceptably different from the true responses. We provide a criterion that can be used to decide whether prediction is valid at a certain point. The criterion is based on the existence of an unbiased estimate of the distribution function associated to the "future" observation. In addition, in the context of regression analysis, the categorical control problem that is quite different from the numerical control problem in the setting of the target is considered. Categorical control may be compared to interval prediction, whereas numerical control is compared to point prediction. Our derivation is based on the Scheffé-type simultaneous tolerance interval at two distinct points.
