Self-reference, the Dimensionality and Scale of Quantum Mechanical Effects, Critical Phenomena, and Qualia

Self-reference, the postulated key to a more complete understanding of quantum mechanics, is shown to be a necessary mathematical basis for an evolution of all that exists in relation to a self-created quantum cosmology. The initial act of this self-creation - a critical phenomenon where the material phase transitions give rise simultaneously to mass and the strong, electro-magnetic, weak properties of mater in agreement with those of the standard model of elementary particle physics - is shown to concern 3+l dimensional Lorentzian space/time and Einstein's general relativity. Similarly subsequent acts giving rise to entirely novel material phase transitions and properties of matter, as predicted by renormalization group theory for which K.G. Wilson received the Nobel Prize, may include, evidence is presenæd those of self-aware, possibly conscious, living systems.

Fractal Structure in DNA Code and Human Language : Towards a Semiotics of Biogenetic Information

Evidence obtained by computer analysis confirms the scientific validity of the now wide-spread use of semiotic-linguistic nomenclature to describe the workings of the genetic apparatus. It shows that both natural languages with their semantic speech stuctures, which are sign representations of human mental activity and thought, and genetic texts(ie DNA/ RNA and proteins, etc) exhibit a strategically close geometrical fractal framework. A similar analysis of random texts of the same characters leads to the loss of this framework. This not only points to a causal supergenetic relationship between such texts that proceeds at some level in the demonstrated fractal framework, but that, for example, Chomsky's concept of a universal grammar, in relation to all forms of human languages (including mathematics and computer languages), is probably not only correct but is naturally genetically inherent.

Universal Rewrite and Self-Organization

The conventional approach to computer programming using rewrite systems can be extended to create a universal rewrite system, which provides a computational approach to both physics and mathematics, based on the idea of a zero totality alphabet. Mathematics emerges from the system in the form of a Clifford-type algebra, while physics takes the form of nilpotent quantum mechanics (NQM). The most significant characteristic of NQM is that the quantum system (fermion state) and its environment (vacuum) are mathematical mirror images of each other. So a change in one automatically leads to corresponding changes in the other. We have used this characteristic as a model for self-organization, which has applications well beyond quantum physics. The nilpotent structure, seen as emerging from two commutative vector spaces, has a number of identifiable characteristics which we can expect to find in systems where self-organization is dominant; a recent case involves the neurons in the visual cortex. We expect to find many complex systems where our general principles, based, by analogy, on NQM, will apply.

Is the Human Brain Quantum Mechanical?

Research published by Dubois, on a computational derivation of quantum relativist electromagnetic systems, and by Rowlands, on the discovery of a self-organized universal process of universal rewrite productions for computer hardware to interpret, taken together with new evidence, all support the contention that the information-processing architecture of the human brain is indeed quantum mechanical. In particular, the evidence of Scully et al taken together with that of Schempp, presented over several years, shows how the usual objection to quantum coherence, that the brain is a thermodynamic hot machine, can be and are overcome, as is indeed would appear to be the case for the photosynthetic harvesting of photons by chlorophyll.

Information, Bifurcation and Entropy in the Universal Rewrite System

The universal rewrite system, which has previously been applied especially to the generation of the number system and to nilpotent quantum mechanics, not only provides a generalised description for all natural processes but also creates a direct measure of entropy increase and of information transfer, which is especially significant for systems on the edge of chaos. Entropy and information can be shown to have a direct connection with the concept of the generation of the number field at a very fundamental level.

Hypercomputation

At the end of the last century, Planck opened the door onto the quantum mechanical world. Yet, ever since, despite enormous advances, science has resisted the precept implicit in the quantum mechanical formalism now increasingly confirmed by the experimental evidence, that reality is fundamentally non-local and reducible only locally to the classical Newtonian understanding that subsumed science before Planck's discovery. Even now such advanced ideas for the unification of physics such as string theory begin by quantizing an essentially classical model. Yet the expanding science and emerging technology of quantum cybernetics and information processing will, I am now convinced, change this. In particular, quantum holography/holochory offers such quantum non-local modelling such as quantum neural information processing or the completion began by Einstein, for Riemann's programme for the geometrization of physics, where the local classical models emerge as invariants. It is not therefore that neural networking or Einstein's general relativity are wrong, but that they are of limited application to modelling the reality in which we live, and that quantum models offer a new category of explanatory power, as this paper attempts to demonstrate, the breadth of which has yet to be fully appreciated.

Common Sense (What is it?) and the Church Turing Hypothesis

I have long felt that computation is a matter of common sense -English dictionary, sound practical judgement. This paper presented at the British Theoretical Computer Science Colloquium at the University of Warwick in March 24-26, 1986. proposed a definition of common sense as essential element in the solution of the problem of machine intelligence. lt concluded, that common sense is both the deep syntax of natural processes and governs the basic semantics of logical or mathematical language. Then published only as an abstract, I felt it merited inclusion in CASYS 07

Riemann Hypothesis

A novel approach to a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis (that all the zeros of the Zeta function lie on the line x = 1/2) is presented. It is based on the universal nilpotent computational rewrite system (NUCRS), derived in the World Scientific book Zero to lnfinity, from a single nilpotent Dirac operator (Rowlands, 2007), establishing an entirely novel semantic computational foundation simultaneously for both mathematics and quantum physics. Tangible evidence is that the Zeta function is known to represent a quantum system and that the criterion of nilpotence corresponds to (a) Pauli exclusion with unique fermion states spin 1/2 and (b) an infinite rewrite alphabet that also corresponds to the infinite roots of -1, of which the nilpotent generalization of Dirac' s famous quantum mechanical equation is the universal computational order code.

A Remarkable Quantum Mechanical Disccovery

Evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that Diaz and Rowlands' remarkable discovery of a universal grammar for semantic quantum mechanical mathematical language description, is a candidate for 'altemative (a)' in Leggett's incisive Einstein's Legacy viewpoint in Science, 307, 2005, 871-872 on 'The Quantum Measurement(QM) Problem'. 'Alternative (a)' says that 'QM is the complete truth about the physical world (in the sense that it will always give reliable predictions concerning the nature of experiments) at all levels and describes an external reality'.

Zenergy : The "Phaseonium" of Dark Energy That Fuels the Natural Structures of the Universe

To incorporate thermodynamic, quantum and classical dynamical laws, the Universe is treated as a quantum Carnot engine (QCE) or single heat bath in which the ensemble of elementary particles retains a small amount of quantum coherence, so as to constitute new states of matter known as "phaseonia", the first being its Zenergy, the empty ensemble of dark energy. How Zenergy fuels the natural structure of the Universe, is then in complete accord with the existence of 3+l space-time, the known elementary particles quantizations and galactic structure. Similar QCE explanations of the natural structure of DNA, and of the human brain/mind as a conscious engine are given. Thus 'the Universe, life, consciousness and everything' may derive its entire structure from this difference between classical and quantum mechanical thermodynamic machines.
