http://popups.lib.uliege.be/1373-5411/index.php?id=2562 Consciousness, in particular its nature, is a very elusive notion. It can be felt when one tries to understand the correlation between the objective material aspect of the brain and the subjective mental aspect of consciousness (the explanatory gap). In this contribution we propose an interpretation based on a general metamodel we have developed for complex autonomous systems. We show that self-knowledge (i.e. consciousness) depends on the degree of self-reference of the system.
