The Kottler-Whittaker Metric of the Homogeneous Gravitational Field and the Assumption of the Conservation of Spacetime Areas

In the Kottler-Whittaker metric of the homogeneous gravitational field the spacetime volume is conserved. The spacetime area is conserved, as well, if only the space dimension parallel to the field is taken into account. The latter property leads to an intuitive account of geodesic motion. Starting from the so-called Rindler hyperbolae, which describe constant proper acceleration in special relativity, the coordinate transformations for the equivalent homogeneous gravitational field are developed and applied to some elementary gravitational scenarios. The geodesic equations of planar fields are analyzed and compared for the two cases of volume conserving metrics and "isotropic" metrics conserving spacetime areas. An isotropic counterpart of the Schwarzschild metric is given by Broekaert's "scalar gravitation model", which is shortly discussed.

The Role of Consciousness for the Passage of Time

The notion of the "passage of time" addresses the experienced fact of motion in time. Depending on the respective viewpoint, we may either say that the conscious now is moving through the once-and-for-all fixed space-time universe, or we may say that the space-time universe is moving through the constant now. In this article I try to explain the "subjective illusion" of dynamical flow on the basis of a static space-time universe as it is suggested by relativity theory. The conceptual toolkit for this undertaking is provided by the philosophy of spacetime holism, which I have suggested as a useful approach to a variety of problems. While the argument has already been developed in an earlier publication from a more technical point of view, this article concentrates on the experiential aspects of the involved concepts.

An Outside View of Space and Time

According to the standard interpretation of the special theory of relativity, space and time form a unity, which is described by the so-called Minkowski geometry. Using a distinction between inside and outside views, an alternative interpretation of special relativity can be formulated. This interpretation is connected to the construction of an outside view of space-time, which is described by a 4-dimensional and fully Euclidean geometry. The construction of an outside view also for general relativity is attempted, the basis for which lies in the assumption that the speed of light in a gravitational field - as seen from the outside - depends on gravitational potential and on direction. Finally, it is argued that the suggested outside view might serve as a basis for new approaches in the philosophy of space and time.
