L’anguille : son histoire et son élevage

This introduction to the biotogy and the aquaculture of the european eel, Anguilla anguilla, describes the reproduction life cycle of this species including a brief review on the recent literature. Special attention is given to the recent and serious decrease of the european glass eel stock, a phenomenon also observed in Belgium. Evolutions in the field of eel aquaculture in Europe are outlined, from extensive valliculture to intensive flow through systems and closed recirculation units. A pilot scale recirculation system is described and data on growth and pathology are discussed.
